What is a Fiktionsbescheinigung?
A Fiktionsbescheinigung is a temporary residence permit in Germany. Fiktionsbescheinigung is issued if the foreigner’s electronic residence permit cannot be issued before to the expiration of the current valid residence permit or if there is a delay in processing the residence permit, and during this period if the valid visa expires.
When applying for a new or renewed residence permit, a fictitious certificate may only be provided if the applicant’s current residence permit is valid.
Why do you need Fiktionsbescheinigung?
There are various factors that might cause your residence permit to be delayed, including appointment unavailability, missing documents, and the 4–6 week processing period to get the electronic resident card. As a result, it is usually best to prepare and submit your residence permit application well in advance. However, if there is any delay, your entry visa could expire, and you may end up residing in Germany without a visa. Legally, you are not allowed to reside in Germany without a valid visa. To prevent complications, a temporary visa known as a Fiktionsbescheinigung is required.

Traveling with a Fiktionsbescheinigung?
If the Fiktionsbescheinigung is issued in accordance with Section 81 Paragraph 4 of the Residence Act, the holder may exit Germany and reenter.
From a legal perspective, the fictitious certificate is equivalent to a residency permit, so you may freely travel with it. It will allow you to enter and exit Germany several times. Still, it’s always a good idea to double-check with the appropriate authorities to know what specific information to keep in mind and what extra documentation is necessary before entering or departing the country.

Final Thoughts
In the event that you did not submit the residence permit application before the deadline, the immigration authorities might refuse to issue Fiktionsbescheinigung. Therefore, you should submit an extension application well in advance of the permit or visa’s expiration date in order to avoid any complications.
